4 Apr 2008 - Hopton in fear as Vikings invade!

Viking Day!!

We assembed the Viking Chiefs and villagers ready for the ‘Thing’ meeting.

Inside the Long House, we discussed our poor soil, bad harvests, starving cattle and hungry children.  Some of us could not sell our goods as no one had any money.

We decided to raid a monastery in England , but first we had to prepare.

We made various things ready for our journey

We made:    Oars, fishing rods, shields and axes.

We boarded our Long ship in the harbour and rowed to England .

We had to stop half way to catch fish as we were hungry.

We entered English waters and with stealth we approached the Anglo-Saxon settlement. (The boat and fort)

Suddenly the Viking Raiders ran shouting towards the settlement, raided the monastery of all its’ silver treasures and headed back to the ship before the Anglo-Saxons could defend themselves or catch us!

We rowed home victorious and wealthy; all the treasure went into the treasure box to be shared out equally among the raiders later.

We told stories of our raids around our fire place in the long house on our return.  There were some pretty gruesome stories!  Some of us had captured slaves and slain many Anglo-Saxons.

We had a feast of Honey root vegetables, Green soup and bread with our Viking pack lunches we had brought in to celebrate our victory.

Thank you Viking Mrs Brain for being in charge of cooking AGAIN!

That afternoon we had another ‘Thing’ meeting.  The Vikings told of how they had seen lush green fields, good soil and fat cattle.  We decided we wanted this better life and returned to England

to settle.

We built a new village and settled very happily.
