WW2 EVACUEES

Our first workshop was the air raid siren where we learnt about what would happen in the shelter. Then we went into the shelter and had a blackout. In the shelter it was very hot and squashed and it made us imagine what it would be like trying to get to sleep in it with all the babies crying. Then the lady put the air raid siren on. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard!!!

I learnt that in the air raid shelter there wasn’t much to do, it was quite cramped so only little games could be played, they would sing quite loud so that they couldn’t hear the sound of the air raid sirens and it would cheer them up. It was boring and abysmal to be in there and just wait, but it was the safest place to be.

I learnt that there was little space and I was amazed at the size of the toilets they had. I also learnt about how dark it can be. I felt scared and blank in my eyes, there was nothing to do and hardly any space to anything or move.

After lunch we went to the evacuation workshop and learnt some more about the evacuation and then we got on a train like evacuees and the teacher talked about how they didn’t’ know where they were going and other interesting facts while the teachers dressed up in roles of people who would pick us! It was really funny when they were picking who they wanted, Miss Skidmore was the owner of The Old Spot pub, Mrs Monday was the Lady of the Manor, Mrs Brain was the florist and when the teachers had picked there were lots of rejects so the lady of the manor got them all because she had enough beds for them!

I felt very much like an evacuee. All the detail we added like: a gas mask box, a ration book, an ID card and an ID tag made it feel more lifelike than ever. I was very happy that I was allowed to take my teddy bear because I was quite scared of the Billeting Officer.

During the blackout it makes you feel emotional as though the whole world has gone and it makes you feel very restricted in what you can and can’t do. The evacuation was very exciting for most children at first as they had never been on trains before. When you were picked you had to live with that person for one or two years.

During the evacuation I learnt how it felt like to stand there praying that you would get picked and if you didn’t you would be disappointed in yourself. I also learnt why it was important to look your best on the day. The evacuees must have been so nervous when they were getting picked.

It felt quite scary because during the blackout you could hear bombs going off and there were no lights in the air raid shelter. I would have been petrified if I was a real evacuee because you would be getting sent away to another family which you hadn’t met.

I hope we will get another trip soon because I learnt a lot from going to the steam museum in Swindon .

I would like to thank Miss Skidmore, Mrs Brain, Mrs Mayne and Mrs Monday for an amazing and incredible day out.

Thank you for the most phenomenal day ever Miss Skidmore!
